I am taking Terrence Olson's Moral Foundations of Human Development (SFL 480) this semester and I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!
I drove up to Salt Lake today and as I listened to the radio I started thinking about media and my moral foundations class. I realized how many songs on the radio are about being a victim. Sad love songs are blaming past lovers for wrongdoings, saying that they will always be affected by that one choice or relationship. Angry relationship songs justify all sorts of bad behavior out of revenge or resentment.
However, as I flipped through stations I also found songs that were based more on compassion and forgiveness.
In the end, I guess we can decide what kind of media to fill our lives with because there are all types out there. I have been trying to get better at making sure that my precious time is only spent with positive and uplifting media.
You can do it! I sure can do better as well. Pandora is a great option when wanting to listen to only one type of (safe) music. I love putting on the Colbie Caillat station and not having to worry about inappropriate messages. Just an option:) Depends on what you like!
ReplyDeleteIt is good to always make a conscious effort in choosing the media we are exposing ourselves to. This is a good reminder for me to check what I am watching or listening to. Sometimes I'll listen to songs because I love the beat but in reality i know it's a bad song due to its lyrics. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteThis is deep! And Terry is retiring this year! :( So sad!
